Let’s pay 10k to see boys kick a ball

A yellow card serves as a formal, official warning to a player or coach for committing a less severe or reckless infraction.

A red card indicates a major offense and results in the immediate and permanent ejection of the player from the match.

Quick question – who blanking cares?

And, yes, it’s a rhetorical question!

Ahhhhhh soccer, and the World Cup.

An …

Inferior sport – to shall we say the pageantry of football.

Inferior fans – more about their insanity later.

Inferior men – in terms of brute strength, do not misunderstand, no one is saying futbol participants are not phenomenal athletes, but with hockey players, boxers, rugby members and pickle ballers, the testosterone levels are significantly more evident.

When male soccer players “fight” they resemble air dancers – (also known as inflatable tube men; you know the things you see floating and flapping around outside car dealers, tax preparers, and grand openings) – more than real men battling.

Critics frequently point out that this is overwhelmingly a men’s professional soccer problem, noting that the women’s game generally features far more physical resilience and a refusal to simulate injuries.

And, for our purposes, it is being played in the Garden State, in an inferior sports complex, amidst the hilly refuse known as The Meadowlands.

What an attraction!!!

Who wouldn’t want to attend that for $11,044???

New Jersey is facing an estimated $48 million bill for transit operations while FIFA is contributing nothing towards local transportation costs. To offset these deficits, NJ Transit initially proposed round-trip tickets of $150 before reducing them to $98, sparking local backlash.

Local transit experts warn that the complex rail plan relies heavily on Amtrak’s ability to avoid disruptions. Recent smaller-scale soccer events at MetLife Stadium have already exposed vulnerabilities, causing train delays, equipment failures, and chaotic crowd surges.

Heightened security at MetLife Stadium strictly limits tailgating and traditional stadium parking. In Midtown Manhattan, game days are designated as “Gridlock Alert Days,” featuring massive street closures and strict limitations on commercial trucks and for-hire vehicles.

Massive Transit Dependency: Because tailgating is prohibited and general parking is nearly non-existent, the vast majority of the 82,000+ attendees must use public transportation. Moving this crowd requires NJ Transit to run trains every 5 minutes—a massive challenge relying entirely on the reliability of Amtrak’s aging Northeast Corridor infrastructure.

High Costs and Backlash: Securing the rail line costs millions per match, forcing authorities to implement $98 round-trip tickets from Manhattan, which has sparked severe financial pushback from fans and local politicians.

No Walkable Access: State laws and safety hazards on surrounding highways like Route 3 and Route 120 make it illegal and incredibly dangerous to walk to the stadium from surrounding towns or nearby hotels.

Traffic and Congestion: With personal cars and ride-shares highly restricted from doing direct drop-offs near the stadium, event planners have had to orchestrate massive park-and-ride shuttle operations to manage the flow of vehicles.

With many matches taking place outdoors during the summer, heat exhaustion and heatstroke are primary concerns.

And, of course, the obvious exposure to a global gathering, when everyone’s immune deficiencies have never been more prevalent.

Measles: Public health experts are highly concerned about measles resurgences. The highly contagious disease can spread easily among unvaccinated individuals in packed stadiums and fan fests.

Mosquito-borne Illnesses: Visitors and workers in certain host regions face risks from mosquito bites, with officials monitoring for viruses like dengue and chikungunya.

Surveillance: In the absence of a unified federal public health response, local health departments and universities are relying on wastewater monitoring to track respiratory viruses, norovirus, and other pathogens.

Healthcare Strain: Large influxes of tourists are expected to strain local emergency departments and urgent care facilities, making it highly important for international attendees to secure adequate travel medical insurance before arrival.

And now, let’s get back to the mayhem of the aforementioned fans.

The intense tribalism surrounding soccer can result in harrowing statistics, ranging from fatal crowd disasters to violent crime spikes and life-threatening medical events. Soccer’s culture of deep, localized, and sometimes irrational loyalty operates much like a real tribe. Fans build entire identities around their clubs – using chants, colors, and rituals to signal “in-group” belonging while treating rival supporters as the “out-group.”

63% Increase in Crime: A study from ScienceDirect analyzing crime data in Germany found that violent crime spiked by 17% on standard match days, and surged by an astonishing 63% during major rivalry games.

8-Year High in Arrests: In the United Kingdom, police reported a 59% increase in soccer-related arrests compared to pre-pandemic levels, with 70% of the offenses committed by individuals aged 18 to 30.

In the end, it would benefit us all to graciously, effectively, and efficiently deliberate the merits of soccer and its love/hate relationship, specifically to Americans.

It is by far the world’s most popular sport.

Normally, I would lean toward the U.S.A. ‘s populace embracing its all-too-often “go big or go home,” or similar idiotic idioms as being part of the problem. However, in this case I cry foul on that.

Someone once told me to match energy in life. In this case, I am. It is not a complex sport to comprehend. It is not nearly as exciting as many of the athletic offerings available to spectators.

What soccer is, is simple. And to be castigated for not appreciating boys running up and down, and back and forth, and in and out, and over and under, for more than 120 minutes, with little to no use of their hands and beyond sparse scoring – is unnecessary.

Disliking soccer is perfectly acceptable. Forcing someone to espouse the merits of a sport he or she simply does not savor, should not be devoured as ignorance, but instead digested with tolerance.

Did You Know? 318 Deaths: In 1964, a referee disallowed a goal for Argentina against Peru during an Olympic qualifying match in Lima. The resulting riot and police use of tear gas triggered a stampede. Fans were crushed to death in locked stadium tunnels, making it the deadliest single event in soccer history.
